How to Choose the Right Bunk Bed

1. Measure ceiling height. Standard bunk beds are usually about 5 to 6 feet tall, and triple bunks and loft beds can be taller. Leave about 30 to 36 inches between the top of the upper mattress and the ceiling so your child can sit up comfortably.
2. Measure the floor space. Measure the length and width of the bed, plus the space the ladder or staircase needs and clearance for drawers or a trundle to open.
3. Match the mattress to the bed. Use the mattress size and maximum thickness listed for that model. The top bunk’s guardrails should extend at least 5 inches above the mattress, so a mattress that is too thick reduces their protection.
4. Plan for growing kids. Twin over full and full over full bunk beds give older kids and teens more room. Some twin over twin bunk beds can also be separated into two standalone beds later.
