Most bedrooms are lit from the ceiling, and ceiling light is the worst possible light for makeup. It lands on your forehead and leaves shadows under your brows, nose and chin, so you end up blending into shadows that are not really there. A makeup vanity with lights fixes that by putting light where it belongs: in front of your face, at eye level.
This guide explains the three ways makeup vanities are lit, what to look for in brightness and color, where to place a lighted vanity, and which storage features separate a real makeup vanity from a table with a mirror. At the end is a side-by-side look at nine lighted vanities we carry.
The short version
- Light from the front and sides beats light from above. That is the whole point of a lighted vanity.
- There are three main styles: Hollywood bulbs around the mirror, LED built into the mirror, and lighting built into the vanity itself.
- If you can adjust it, choose neutral or daylight white. Warm, yellowish light makes foundation look different once you step outside.
- Dimmers and brightness settings matter more than the number of bulbs.
- Plan for power. Every lighted vanity needs an outlet within cord reach.
- Felt-lined drawers and glass tops are the storage details that make a vanity work for makeup.
Why makeup vanity lighting matters
Good makeup light does three jobs. It removes shadows, so you can see the actual shape of your face. It shows true color, so foundation and concealer match in daylight as well as indoors. And it stays the same at 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., so your routine is not at the mercy of the window.
The fix is not more light from above. It is light from in front of you and from both sides, which fills in shadows evenly. That is why lighted vanity mirrors put bulbs or LEDs around the frame rather than over the top.
The three types of lighted makeup vanities
1. Hollywood bulb mirrors
The classic dressing-room look: a row of round bulbs framing the mirror. Because the light comes from many points around your face, it fills shadows very evenly. In our catalog, Felicity surrounds a beveled mirror with eleven Hollywood-style LED lights, Elijah uses nine LED bulbs, and Regina frames its mirror in bulbs. Afshan and Umbridge use eleven retro-style bulbs each and ship with E26 bulbs, the same standard base as a household lamp, so replacements are easy to find.
Best for: anyone who wants maximum, even light and the iconic glam look.
2. LED mirrors
Lighting built into the mirror itself as a glowing frame or panel. The look is sleeker and more modern, and there are no individual bulbs to manage. Flora has an integrated LED mirror with a touch switch. Danbury's LED mirror flips down into the top when you are done. Kozlani's mirror has ambient white LED lighting with brightness options, and Cecilia and Eliza both have lighted mirrors as well.
Best for: modern rooms, smaller spaces and anyone who wants a cleaner look.
3. Lighting built into the vanity
Some vanities put the light in the desk rather than the mirror. Chalanna has LED lighting built into the vanity with a 3-way dimmer, plus USB-A and USB-C charging ports, so you can pair it with any mirror you like.
Best for: glam style with flexibility in the mirror you choose.
Already have a vanity? Add a lighted mirror
You do not need to replace a vanity to light it. A tabletop lighted mirror such as the Aghes vanity mirror, with seven LED bulbs and a touch power button, turns any desk or vanity into a lit makeup station. Find more in our vanity and bedroom mirrors.

Prices were current when this guide was written. The pattern is clear: as you move up in price you mostly buy storage, not light. Even the most affordable models here light your face well.
Light color and brightness: what to look for
Light color is measured in Kelvin. Warm white, around 2,700 to 3,000K, is cozy but yellow, and it makes foundation look warmer than it is. Neutral white sits around 3,500 to 4,500K, and daylight white runs about 5,000 to 6,500K. For makeup, neutral to daylight is the safer choice, because it is closer to the light people will see you in outside.
Some lighting is also rated for CRI, or color rendering index. A CRI of 90 or higher shows colors more accurately. Most furniture listings, including ours, do not publish Kelvin or CRI for vanity lighting, so if color accuracy matters to you, look at the vanity in person in one of our showrooms.
Brightness control is often more useful than raw brightness. Chalanna's 3-way dimmer and Kozlani's brightness options let you go bright for detailed work and soft for winding down at night.
Where to put a lighted makeup vanity
- Face the window. Natural light from in front of you is ideal. Light from behind turns your reflection into a silhouette.
- Keep the mirror at eye level when seated. Most vanity mirrors are set for this automatically when they attach to the desk.
- Find the outlet first. Lighted mirrors and USB ports need power. Chalanna ships with a 77-inch cord, for example.
- Manage the cords. Clip cords to the back of the vanity so they do not snag in drawers or across the floor.
- Leave seating room. Plan 24 to 30 inches in front of the vanity for the stool. Our vanity desk size guide covers every measurement.
Storage that makes it a makeup vanity
Lighting is half of what makes a makeup vanity. The other half is storage designed for small, delicate things:
- Felt-lined drawers protect compacts, palettes and jewelry from scratches. Felicity has nine, and Regina lines its top drawer in felt.
- Glass tops protect the surface from powder and spills, and on Afshan, Umbridge and Danbury they let you see the cosmetics in the drawer below.
- Cabinets with shelves hold tall bottles and hair tools. Flora has an adjustable shelf, and Elijah has a side cabinet.
- Hidden storage keeps the top clear. Danbury's stool has storage inside, and Harvey's mirror slides open to reveal jewelry hooks and shelves.
Five lighting mistakes to avoid
- Relying on the ceiling light. It creates the very shadows you are trying to cover.
- Choosing warm light for makeup. Yellow light hides how foundation will really look outside.
- Sitting with your back to the window. Your face ends up in shadow no matter how good the mirror is.
- Forgetting the outlet. An extension cord across the bedroom floor is a trip hazard.
- Buying light without storage. If the top is covered in products, the best mirror in the world will not help.

Frequently asked questions
What color light is best for doing makeup?
Neutral to daylight white, roughly 4,000 to 5,000K, is the safest choice because it is closest to how your makeup will look outdoors. Warm, yellowish light makes foundation look warmer than it really is.
Are Hollywood bulbs or LED mirrors better for makeup?
Both work well because both light your face from the front and sides. Hollywood bulbs give a classic glam look and very even light from many points. LED mirrors look sleeker and suit modern or smaller rooms.
Where should makeup vanity lights be placed?
At eye level, in front of you and on both sides of your face. Light from above or behind creates shadows, which is why lighted vanity mirrors frame the glass instead of lighting it from the top.
Can you replace the bulbs on a lighted makeup vanity?
It depends on the design. Vanities with screw-in bulbs, such as models that use standard E26 bulbs, are easy to re-bulb. Mirrors with integrated LEDs are typically built in, so check the product details before you buy.
Do lighted makeup vanities need to be plugged in?
Yes. Lighted mirrors and vanities with built-in LEDs or USB ports plug into a standard wall outlet, so place the vanity within cord reach of one.
What is the best makeup vanity for a small space?
Look for a narrow footprint, a mirror that folds or slides away and storage built into the stool. A flip-top LED vanity around 24 inches wide gives you lighting and storage without taking over the room.
